One of the most impressive mezzo-soprano of her generation, acclaimed artist Alessandra Volpe completed her musical studies at the Conservatory ‘Niccolò Piccini’ in Bari where she graduated in piano and singing.
She launched her career as interpreters of some of bel canto’s most challenging role (Adalgisa in Norma, Giovanna Seymour in Anna Bolena and Romeo in Capuleti e Montecchi), to establish later herself as an outstanding per- former in leading roles of mezzo-soprano.
While Amneris, Eboli, Fenena, Maddalena and Requiem are her most admired in the Verdi repertoire, it is just as important to mention his verismo roles, which have brought appreciation for her vocal elegance and scenic presence: Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana, Principessa di Bouillon in Adriana Lecouvreur, Tigrana in Edgard, until Poulenc’s La voix humane and the title role both in Hindemith’s Sancta Susanna and in Marco Tutino’s opera La Ciociara.
Another success Alessandra’s interpretation in the title role of Bizet’s Carmen.
Alessandra has performed in such venues as Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Opernhaus Zürich, Welsh National Opera, Den Norske Opera in Oslo, Carlo Fe- lice in Genoa, Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Teatro Lirico in Cagliari, Opéra de Nice, Opera de Oviedo, Stadttheater St.Gallen, Teatro São Carlos in Lisbon, London’s Royal Albert Hall, Florentine Opera, Opera Lyra in Ottawa, Opera de Tenerife, Glyndebourne Festival, Wexford Festival, Rossini Opera Festival Wildbad and Arena di Verona.
The recent seasons brought Alessandra to the Opera Lyra in Ottawa, the Opera Tampa, Welsh National Opera in Cardiff, Opernhaus Zürich and Den Norske Opera Oslo in the title role of Bizet’s Carmen.
As well as to Auditorio de Tenerife for Fenena in Nabucco and Giovanna Seymour in Anna Bolena, to the Opera Oviedo for Fenena in Nabucco again and Maddalena in Rigoletto, to Stadttheater St.Gallen for Adalgisa in Norma.
Most recently, she appeared in the title role of Margherita by Foroni at the Wexford Opera Festival and of la Ciociara by Marco Tutino, in the acclaimed production of Francesca Zambello at Teatro Lirico in Cagliari.
Furthermore she sang Elisabetta in Maria Stuarda at Teatro São Carlos Lis- bon, Adalgisa in Norma at Opéra de Nice, Amneris in Aida at the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, at Carlo Felice in Genoa and at Opera North in Leeds, Eboli in Don Carlo at St. Gallen Theater, Verdi Requiem at London’s Royal Albert Hall, Tigrana in Edgard Summer Opera Festival in St.Gallen, Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana at Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari and Teatro Lirico in Cagliari.
Further plans include Principessa di Bouillon in Adriana Lecouvreur at Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Verdi Requiem in Seul, Amneris in a new production of Aida in St. Gallen, Carmen at Den Norske Opera Oslo, Rubria in Nerone by Boito at Bregenz Festspiele.
