Juan José De León


Born in Texas, Juan José De León holds a Masters in Music from Southern Methodist University and a degree in “Arts in Music” from the University of North Texas.

An award winning tenor, Juan José De Leon has rapidly established himself as one of the best belcanto tenors of his generation. National Semi-Finalist at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 2011. First prize in The Mildred Miller International Vocal Competition, second Prize, The Sergio Franchi Prize, and Critic’s Choice Prize in The Marcello Giordani International Vocal Competition, third Prize in The Gerda Lissner International Vocal Competition, second Prize and Audience Favourite in the Opera Birmingham Vocal Competition, and third Prize from the Dallas Opera Guild Vocal Competition. He has since performed with the major opera companies, orchestra and festival worldwide


He started his career as “resident artist” at Pittsburgh Opera for two seasons, where he made his debut and performed in such roles as Paolino in Il matrimonio segreto, Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola, Tamino in The Magic Flute and Nadir in the Pêcheurs de perles. Since 2013/2014, he made major company debuts in the world leading opera houses such as at New York MET  taking part in the world premiere of Nico Muhly’s Two Boys, Teatro alla Scala with Lucia di Lammermoor (Lord Arturo) and I Pagliacci (Beppe), Lyric Opera of Chicago in Ein italienischer Sänger (Capriccio) conducted by Andrew Davis, Wiener Staatsoper as Conte di Almaviva (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Ein italienischer Sänger (Capriccio) at Opéra National de Paris, Il barbiere di Siviglia (Conte d’Almaviva) at The New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv, at Opera di Roma, at Arena di Verona,  in Palma de Mallorca and at Aalto-Musiktheater Essen, La Cenerentola (Don Ramiro) in Stuttgart, Peppe in I Pagliacci at Teatro Regio di Torino under the baton of Nicola Luisotti.

Among his recent engagements, he has sung the new production of Cenerentola  at Opéra National de Paris conducted by M° Dantone, Conte d’Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia at Sydney Operahouse, again Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola at Deutsche Oper am Rhein, at Opera de Limoges, at Opéra de Montreal and at Theater Basel (new production).

Engagement in the 2018/19 season include Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola at Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf , Il barbiere di Siviglia (Conte d’Almaviva) at Opéra de Toulon, Capriccio (Ein italienischer Sänger) at Teatro Real de Madrid, Lucia di Lammermoor (Lord Arturo) at ABAO in Bilbao
